Overcoming the limitations of Western-centric methodologies and examining the pluralistic formation of Korean studies from a global perspective is essential.

‘Knowledge and Institutions’ investigates the historical origins of K-Humanities internationally, and examines from multiple perspectives how knowledge, culture, and norms are institutionalized into public discourse. In doing so, it addresses the social challenges of an age of civilizational transformation and offers a new model: a public turn in a critical, practical Korean studies.

A Prosopographical Study of Overseas Korean Studies as a Historical Resource for K-Humanities

  • Examining intellectual network patterns within the geopolitics of colonialism and division, and their effect on contemporary history
  • Tracing, through networks among intellectuals, the scenes in which K-Humanities emerges on a global horizon

The Circulation of Books (Knowledge) within East Asian Knowledge Networks and the Formation of Scholarly Classics

  • Illuminating the discursive foundations and historical-political contexts of pivotal scholarly classics such as Song of Ariran
  • Tracing the global emergence of K-Humanities through networks of books and discourse

Year 3

A Study of East Asian Textbook Networks as a Critical History of Knowledge, Culture, and Institutions

  • Comparative analysis of the institutional influence of national language and history textbooks in East Asian countries during the Cold War and post-Cold War eras
  • Critically examining how the institutionalization of scholarly knowledge manifests discursive governmentality, and on the differences among its norms
